How to wear over the knee boots

I recently posted a picture on facebook asking your opinion on over-the-knee-boots. 
It got a mixed reaction - I think it's fair to say, you either love them or hate them!
While I fully agree that these style boots can veer into Pretty Woman territory if they’re not styled properly, I have to admit I love them!

These were some of the negative comments:

• Too dressy for casual wear 
• Too hard to style for formal/dressy wear (Difficult to stay out of the 'Pretty Woman' zone)
• They often stop too high up on petites - The length needs to be in proportion to the length of the wearer's legs.
